China company name translator guide

Use this guide to understand how Chinese legal names should be translated, reviewed, and matched before you verify a supplier.

Start with the Chinese legal name

The registered Chinese name is the authoritative company identity. English names on websites, invoices, Alibaba profiles, or emails may be marketing names, translations, or informal aliases.

  • Compare the Chinese name against the business license.
  • Use the USCC when available because names can have variants.
  • Treat a missing Chinese legal name as a reason to request more documents.

Translate meaning, not every character mechanically

Locations and brand names may stay close to pinyin, while terms such as trading, machinery, electronics, technology, import-export, and limited company should normally be translated semantically.

  • 有限公司 usually maps to Co., Ltd. or Limited Liability Company depending on context.
  • 商贸 should usually be reviewed as trading or commerce, not raw pinyin.
  • 电器配件 should be reviewed as electrical appliance parts or accessories.

Use translation as a review aid

A translated or adopted English name helps overseas teams read a report, but it should not replace the Chinese legal name or USCC when matching the entity.
